Summer Safety

 Let the Summer Fun Begin

Are we there yet?! Summer is nearly here, and it’s the perfect time for kids to explore and enjoy the outdoors. While we eagerly embrace the sun-soaked days, it’s essential that we prioritize the well-being of our children. We can create a safe, and enjoyable summer for our little ones, while nurturing a sense of wonder and adventure. Here are a few things to keep in mind so your little ones stay safe and healthy this summer:

  • Sun protection: The sun’s rays are extra powerful this time of year! Be sure your child wears sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses when outside to protect their skin and eyes.
  • Hydration: Encourage your child to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially when playing outside in the heat.
  • Staying Cool: It’s important to know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke on the warmest days of the year. You can prevent heat illnesses by keeping kids cool. Make sure kids wear light-colored, loose clothing. Remind them to stay hydrated, and rest in shaded areas often while outside. Avoid intense activities outside during the hottest hours of the day and teach kids to come indoors immediately if they feel overheated. NEVER  leave kids alone in a parked car.
  • Water safety: Always supervise your child when they’re in or near water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or ocean. Swimming aids such as water wings and noodles are fun toys, but not appropriate replacements for a life jacket.  Consider enrolling children in swimming lessons to improve their skills and teach them to always swim with an adult.
  • Avoiding Head Injuries: summer is the perfect time to ride bikes, scooters, and skateboards. To avoid serious head injuries, make sure your kids wear a helmet, and follow the rules of the road. For more information about bike and pedestrian safety, visit CCC’s Child Safety Page.
  • First Aid Basics: Bumps and scrapes are sure to happen when playing in the great outdoors. Be prepared by keeping your first aid kit stocked with all the essentials. Keep  insect repellent handy to prevent bug bites and check your child for ticks after spending time outside. Have sunscreen ready to re-apply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Practicing fire safety: If you’re camping or having a bonfire, make sure to keep a safe distance from the flames and never leave a fire unattended. When grilling your favorite meals, declare a three foot “kid free zone” to avoid injuries. Take necessary precautions when celebrating with sparklers and fireworks by avoiding loose clothing, and flammable or dry materials. Always be prepared for a fire related accident with extinguishers and water nearby.
  • Be Prepared for Summer Travel: When heading out for a family road trip, be sure your children are in the right car seat, and make sure to take frequent breaks in safe rest areas. If you’re visiting relatives, remind them to be extra careful to keep choking hazards, and dangerous chemicals out of reach.

Caregivers can take proactive measures to protect children from potential risks. Let’s make this summer the best one yet—a season of joyful memories, carefree adventures, and above all, safe and healthy kids!
